Fifteen minutes to claim your handle and build a profile that works even if you never post.
Verified August 2026.
X sits at the bottom of Tier 3 in the complete setup guide for most businesses. It's a low-priority platform for local service businesses, and organic reach without paid amplification is limited.
That said, claim your handle regardless. Handles are first come, first served, and recovering one someone else took is not possible. Fifteen minutes now prevents a permanent compromise later.
X earns real effort mainly for businesses in finance, technology, media, policy, real estate commentary, or anything where being visible to journalists and industry peers matters.
Before you start
- Business email
- Profile photo at 400 × 400 px
- Header at 1500 × 500 px
- A bio of 160 characters or fewer
Step 1: Create the account
Sign up with your business email. Choose your handle carefully — it's your permanent address on the platform.
If your exact business name is taken, add your city or state rather than random characters. @smithplumbingsc reads as legitimate; @smithplumbing8472 reads as spam.
Step 2: Profile fields and their limits
| Field | Hard limit |
|---|---|
| Bio | 160 |
| Display name | 50 |
| Post | 280 free / 25,000 with Premium |
The bio limit is strictly enforced. Go one character over and the profile simply will not save — no warning, no truncation, just a failure. Count before you paste.
The display name (50 characters) is separate from your handle and can include spaces and capital letters. Use your actual business name.
Bio (160 characters) should cover what you do, where, and one distinguishing detail. It's tight enough that a tagline plus a location is often all that fits.
Also complete:
- Location — your city
- Website — the one clickable link you get
- Birth date/founding date — optional; some businesses use their founding year
Step 3: Images
| Asset | Specification |
|---|---|
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 px, 1:1 |
| Header | 1500 × 500 px, 3:1 |
| In-stream image | 1600 × 900 px, 16:9 |
Your profile photo overlaps the lower-left corner of the header. Anything you place there gets covered. Keep that corner clear of text and logos.
The header also crops differently across devices. Keep content centered.
Profile photos display as circles.
Step 4: Pin a post
You can pin one post to the top of your profile. For a business that posts rarely, this is the most valuable real estate you have.
Pin something that functions as an introduction — what you do, who you serve, and how to reach you — rather than whatever you happened to post last. A visitor who lands on your profile from a search should get the picture from the pinned post alone.
Step 5: Decide whether to use it
Be realistic. Organic reach on X without paid promotion is limited for local businesses. If nobody is going to maintain it, the correct outcome is:
- Handle claimed
- Profile complete
- Website link working
- One good pinned post
- Nothing else
A complete profile that isn't active still does its job: it confirms you exist and gets someone to your website. An abandoned account with a half-finished profile and one post from two years ago does the opposite.
If your profession is regulated
The usual rules apply, and X's format makes them harder to satisfy — required disclosures are difficult to fit in 280 characters, and reposting someone else's content may constitute an endorsement.
Investment advisers should note that posts, replies, and DMs are all communications subject to books-and-records requirements. If you're going to use X actively, you need archiving in place before your first post.
Common problems
Bio won't save. You're over 160 characters. Emojis and spaces count.
Header text is covered. It's in the lower-left, under your profile photo.
Handle is taken. Add your city or state. Don't add numbers.
Nobody sees your posts. Expected without paid promotion for most local businesses.
Maintenance
If you're not actively using it, near zero — but check annually that the website link and bio are still accurate. A dead link on a profile you forgot about is worse than no profile.
If you are using it, treat it like any other channel: consistency over volume.
Next steps
That covers every platform in the guide. If information about your business appears wrong on directories you don't recognize, the remaining piece is data aggregators.
Then run the verification pass in the complete setup guide — the step most people skip, and the one that finds the duplicate listings and stale profiles nobody knew existed.
Verified August 2026 against current published sources. X frequently changes features and limits, particularly around Premium tiers.
