GEO Audit · Generative Engine Optimization

Does ChatGPT recommend your business?

When your customers ask Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI Overview for a recommendation in your category — what comes back? Most businesses have never been tested on it. The ones being cited are winning work the others never see.

01 — The basics

What generative engine optimization actually is

When someone asks an AI assistant a question, the model doesn't invent an answer from nothing. It retrieves information from sources it trusts, weighs which ones to cite, and decides which businesses, products, or experts to name.

GEO is the practice of becoming one of those cited sources. It isn't about ranking — there are no "positions" inside an AI response. It's about being part of the answer at all.

The signals that drive GEO differ from traditional SEO. Some overlap, like authority and content quality. Some are new, like entity recognition and citation density across the sources AI models draw from. And some tactics that once helped you rank in Google now work against you in AI engines — keyword stuffing being the most obvious.

02 — What we examine

What the audit covers

Six areas, tested systematically across every major AI engine your customers use.

01

Citation testing

We run 30–50 representative prompts your customers might actually ask across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — documenting where you appear, where competitors appear, and where neither of you does.

02

Source authority

AI engines lean on a specific set of sources: Wikipedia, reputable directories, news outlets, review platforms, and yes, Reddit. We check which mention you, which mention competitors, and which are missing your presence entirely.

03

Entity recognition

When an AI engine sees your business name, does it know what you do, where you operate, and what makes you distinct? Or does it confuse you with someone else, or have no record at all? An unrecognized entity can't be cited.

04

Content parsability

AI engines extract information differently from traditional crawlers. We examine how cleanly your content can be lifted, summarized, and attributed — and where walls of prose or facts buried in images get in the way.

05

Competitive citation gap

For every prompt where a competitor is cited and you aren't, we identify why. Sometimes it's authority. Sometimes a single Wikipedia paragraph. Sometimes a forum thread from 2022. The patterns matter more than any one instance.

06

Schema & structured data

The same JSON-LD that powers AEO also feeds GEO. We check what you have, what's missing, what's wrong, and what's worth adding so AI systems can read you accurately.

03 — Your deliverable

A report written to be read, not skimmed.

Full prompt-by-prompt citation results across five AI engines, with screenshots

Your citation rate measured against category benchmarks

Entity recognition findings, with examples of correct and incorrect AI responses about you

A source-by-source authority audit with specific gaps identified

A prioritized action plan — what to fix first, next, and what's safe to defer

A 60-minute walkthrough call, plus a 30-day check-in as you implement

The report runs 25–40 pages depending on findings. No padding, no filler — every page earns its place.

04 — Fit

Who this is for

This audit makes sense if…

  • Prospects in your category are starting to ask AI tools for recommendations
  • You've never tested whether AI engines mention you — or tested informally and didn't like what you saw
  • Competitors are getting cited and you're not, or you suspect they are
  • You're considering investing in GEO and want a baseline before you spend
  • You're strong in traditional SEO and want to know whether that translates to AI visibility (it often doesn't)

It's probably premature if…

  • You don't have a website or a consistent brand presence yet
  • You're pre-launch and still defining your offering
  • Your fundamentals are broken in ways a traditional SEO audit should catch first
  • No one in your industry is being surfaced by AI engines yet — we'll tell you honestly on the call if that's the case
05 — Timing

Why this matters now

AI-assisted search is no longer a curiosity. ChatGPT reports hundreds of millions of weekly users. Google has rolled AI Overviews into a large share of US queries. Perplexity has become a default research tool for a meaningful slice of professionals. The group of people who ask an AI engine before they ask Google grows every quarter.

Businesses cited in those AI responses get considered. Businesses that aren't get filtered out before a human ever sees a comparison. That filter is invisible — there's no bounce rate, no missed-impression report. You just don't get the call.

The audit tells you where you stand before the gap gets wider.

06 — Investment

What it costs

$X  starting

For businesses with a single location or service line.

Multi-location, multi-service, and enterprise audits are quoted after a brief scoping call. We'll tell you up front whether you fit the base price or need custom scoping — no surprise invoices.

Turnaround: typically 10–14 business days from kickoff.

07 — Questions

Common questions

Will my citation rate improve right after the audit?

No. The audit diagnoses. Improvement comes from implementing the action plan, and most GEO changes take weeks to months to surface because the underlying models and retrieval systems update on their own cadence. Anyone promising fast GEO results is selling you something we wouldn't.

Do you implement the recommendations?

No. We're diagnostic specialists. We'll recommend implementation partners — including ones who don't pay us a referral — or work alongside an internal team or agency you already trust.

How is this different from SEO?

SEO targets ranked results in Google and Bing. GEO targets being named inside AI-generated answers. The signals overlap partially but diverge significantly. A site can rank well in Google and be invisible in ChatGPT, or the reverse. Most businesses need both audits eventually; we'll advise on sequencing.

What if AI engines don't mention my industry at all yet?

Then you don't need this audit yet, and we'll tell you so. We've turned down audits when the timing wasn't right. The 15-minute diagnostic call exists partly to make that call.

Can you audit a competitor for me?

We audit your category, which includes how competitors perform in AI responses. We don't do private competitor-only audits — they tend to get misused.

Start with a conversation

Fifteen minutes. No pitch.

We'll ask about your business, your category, and your goals. You'll learn whether a GEO audit fits, what it would cover for you specifically, and what it would cost.
