When someone in this town searches for a criminal defense lawyer, nine other firms get named and this one gets nothing. Invisible at the exact moment someone has just been arrested. And the page that would have won was already written.
Segment: Law firm (criminal defense and personal injury) · Service: Free Pre-Audit, a visibility snapshot delivered in minutes (SEO / AEO / GEO) · Status: Snapshot delivered — anonymized
A criminal defense and personal injury firm serving the Charleston area, led by an attorney who spent years prosecuting the kinds of cases the firm now defends. Location pages for several cities. A real record. The kind of firm a panicked parent should find at two in the morning.
We ran the free Pre-Audit in September 2026. It starts with the question that parent would ask.
The test almost no one runs
We asked for the best criminal defense attorney in the suburb the firm named as a key market. The results were three lawyer directories (LawInfo, Super Lawyers, Justia) and six firm pages, each built specifically around criminal defense in that town. The firm did not appear anywhere. Neither did its domain.
We tried a second, more buyer-shaped phrasing about hiring a criminal or DUI lawyer near that town. Absent again. The firm only surfaced when we searched its own name. Across two searches, it was named zero times. At least six competitors were named, some of them twice.
You are only findable if someone already knows your name. That is the opposite of how criminal defense clients arrive.
The content exists. The labels say something else.
The firm's Locations menu lists five cities. Four of them point to pages named for criminal and injury work together. The fifth, this town, points to a page named for personal injury only.
Here is the part that stings. That page actually does carry criminal work. It has a full section on criminal defense and DUI for the town. But the web address, the page title, the main headline and the description all say injury. The content exists. The labels tell every search engine and every AI model that it's an injury page.
The firm already paid a writer for that content and is earning nothing from it. It is mislabeled inventory. Invisible to the searcher, and invisible to the AI answer that now decides who gets the call.
A criminal defense page with no hometown
The firm's main criminal defense page has no city in its title. Its description is statewide. The town's name appears on that page only in the navigation and the footer, never in the page's own words. Against six firms whose pages say the town in the title, the headline and the body, this firm reads as a big-city firm. Local intent goes to whoever sounds local, and that is the cheapest kind of case to lose.
A locked door for crawlers
When our crawler identified itself as Googlebot, the server answered "403 Forbidden." On the homepage, on the robots file, and on the llms.txt file. A machine that asks this site who you are gets a locked door. We could not retrieve an llms.txt file at all, so the AI answer engines now handing out lawyer recommendations have nothing authoritative from the firm to read.
A block like this usually comes from a security plugin or a firewall rule, not from anyone's decision. That does not make it harmless.
One fix, on the house
Every Pre-Audit includes one fix we hand over free. Here it was the location link. Point the town's menu item at a page named for criminal defense and injury together, the way the other four cities already are, and rename the page to match the criminal and DUI content already sitting on it. One mislabeled link. One mismatched page name. Small, free, and the firm's to keep.
What we know, and what we don't
A diagnosis is only as trustworthy as its honesty about its own limits. A Pre-Audit is a few minutes of automated checks, so we are careful about what we claim.
- Verified — confirmed directly. Absent from two buyer searches for criminal defense in the town, while nine competing firms and three directories were named. A location page for the town labeled injury-only in its address, title, headline and description, while carrying criminal defense and DUI content. A main criminal defense page with no city in its title or body. A "403 Forbidden" answer to requests identifying as Googlebot. No retrievable llms.txt.
- Directional — strongly supported, not laboratory-proven. That the mislabeling is why the firm is invisible for the town. That relabeling the existing page, and giving the main criminal defense page a hometown, is the fastest win in any of the snapshots we ran this month.
- Pending — waits for the full audit. Whether the "403" hits Google's real crawler or only look-alike requests. A firewall setting decides that, and the answer changes the priority. Plus technical health, content gaps, structured data, local signals, reviews, mobile, speed and conversion paths.
- Unconfirmed — can't be known from outside. Exactly how each AI assistant describes the firm today, without a live test inside each engine.
How we work
We diagnose. We don't take over. The Pre-Audit is a free snapshot, back in three to five minutes, that shows what's wrong. The full audit shows how to fix it, in what order, and what each fix is worth: a prioritized report in plain language, paired with a step-by-step work order that hands cleanly to the firm's own webmaster. Anything touching legal advertising rules is flagged for the firm's own counsel, never presented as legal advice. The firm's team makes the changes, and we follow up at 30, 60 and 90 days. No promises about a ranking number we can't honestly guarantee.
This firm already wrote the page that would win. It just filed it under the wrong name.
Anonymized at our discretion. This reflects a real Pre-Audit snapshot run in September 2026, not a full audit. Identifying details of the firm, its people, and third parties have been withheld. Findings are presented as found, from public pages and search results on the date of the snapshot, with no claim of ranking or revenue outcomes.
